Write a 6-8 page paper combining the ideas of Roger Nierenberg and the lessons you have learned about group psychotherapy. Please consider and include the following in your paper:

•How are the clients in the group and the group therapist like an orchestra and a conductor, respectively? How are they different?

•In another sense, in what ways is the group therapist a fellow orchestra member rather than a conductor?

•How does considering the group therapist in both roles (orchestra member and conductor) helpful in conceptualizing his/her membership in the group and responsibility to the group?

•What issues arise when a group member tries to assume the conductor’s role?

•Nierenberg clearly indicates that a conductor is not a passive role, and yet he also emphasizes listening as a critical leadership trait. Discuss the role of listening for a group therapist, and how this can be used to direct the “music” of the group.
