Assignment # 2: From Analysis to Practice
In this essay, you will use the analysis strategies to write either a persuasive response to the article you selected from Assignment 1 or make an argument based upon one of the following options. You must be able to effectively demonstrate you can use ethos, pathos, logos and kairos in two ways: to critically evaluate your sources and to build your own argument.
In writing a persuasive response, the idea is for you to argue about the topic.
If you chose to write about the topic you wrote about for Essay 1, you are free to agree with the authors position on the topic. In this case, you will use the author as support for your own position.
Keep in mind, however, that this essay is based upon your own position and not the authors.
Remember that you are not required to use each of the rhetorical devices. Use the ones you think are most relevant.
Be careful to avoid using logical fallacies or stereotypes.
Option I
Use the essay you used for Assignment 1 and either argue on the topic or against the author.
Option II
Argue over the safety and long-term health implications of allowing children to play football.
For this topic, you must take a clear stance do not argue that it is up to the individual.
Option III
Select a topic that you feel strongly about and argue a position within that topic. Your argument must be persuasive in structure and take a firm position against either an established perspective from some segment of the opposition.
You will be required to submit a Topic Proposal for this Option.
Essay Requirements
This essay will require outside research.
You may use as many outside sources as you feel are necessary. But as general guide, you may want to limit your use of resources to no more than 3-5.
Specifications: Your essay must consist of 4-5 typed, double spaced pages. You must follow APA format, have one inch margins and use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
Grading Criteria:
1. Demonstrate effective use of ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos.
2. Have an effective persuasive argument
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of rhetorical features such as audience, situation and appropriate argument strategies.
4. Demonstrate critical evaluation of sources
