1. 10:1 writing refers to the idea that making 10 arguments towards 1 example or issue, which contradicts to the traditional 1:10 writing such that providing 10 examples to support 1 argument. In 10:1 writing, instead of providing numerous repetitive evidences to illustrate 1 argument, 10:1 writing focuses on a particular 1 representative example and build numerous arguments based on it. In “Using Evidence to Build a Paper: 10 on 1” by Rosenwasser and Stephan, they compare and contrast the 10:1 writing with 1:10 writing.
One key difference between 10:1 and 1:10 writing is the role of evidence in writing. Generally, I tend to include multiple examples when illustrating my claim, increasing the credibility. However, according to Rosenwasser and Stephen, “evidences should serve to test and develop and evolve the thesis.” Instead of simply acting as a supplementing information to my thesis, evidences should also serve to help progress my thoughts and thesis. Thus, a representative example will serve as the thread for the paper to move on.
We can concentrate on some representatives than others despite that in most research paper that various examples are needed to support the claim. The authors make an analogy of 10:1 writing as the filmmaking process. By providing a representative example, “a pan”, the writer can provide their readers with a general picture of the matter. Then, the writer can move on discussing some selected parts of the examples and making connection between different parts, in other words, the track process. Lastly, by zooming in to discuss a particular part of the examples in details, the writer is able to develop their claim. This is called a zoom process.
Contrast to the traditional 5-paragraph writing, Rosenwasser and Stephan propose a 10:1 writing methods viewing the writing as a dynamic and progressive process. By using a selected example as a thread, the writer is able to jump out of conventional cliche in writing and illustrate their thesis in a more comprehensive and natural way.
2. The term “10:1 writing” describes a suggested content ratio to which neophytes of writing may adhere to while developing a written analysis. Specifically, it states the following: that in general, one should state on the order of ten observations made in the exploration of significance of a single example. According to Rosenwasser and Stephen, the enforcement of this constraint results in a narrowing of the writer’s perspective, thus promoting thought processes which help in the generation of a depthful analysis of a concept. The ideas fostered during this process can then be bolstered and further substantiated by follow-up examples.
This developmental ideology is put forth in juxtaposition is the related “1:10 writing” thought process, which is demonstrated widely in the rigid 5-paragraph essay format popular in many high schools. As one may surmise, “1:10 writing” is an introduction of some 10 or so examples in the exploration of a single idea. Rosenwasser and Stephen posit that such a structure often leads to an unfortunate (and very much unwanted and unneeded) repetition of similar surface-level analyses to substantiate a single idea which in many cases cannot by itself encompass completely the nature of the concept being discussed.
