BIO121 formal lab report instructions The purpose of writing a formal lab report is to inform others of your experiment and results and to sufficiently draw conclusions about the meaning of those results. A good lab report format includes six main sections: • title • introduction • materials and methods • results • discussion • references You will be writing your formal lab report on the Yeast Fermentation Lab. Use the lab protocol as a guide to help you fill in the following sections. Title: The title states the focus of your experiment. The title should be to the point, descriptive, accurate and concise (ten words or less). Introduction: The introduction of a lab report provides a short background about the subject and also states the purpose of your experiment. Your hypothesis should be included in the introduction, as well as a brief statement about how you intend to test your hypothesis. Materials and Methods: This section of your lab report involves producing a written description of the materials used and the methods applied in performing the experiment. It should not be a list of materials and steps—it must be written in sentence and paragraph form. The information you include should not be overly detailed, but should provide enough detail so that someone else could perform the experiment by following your instructions. Results: The results section should include all tabulated data from observations during your experiment. This inculdes charts, tables, graphs, and illustrations of the data you collected. Every figure used should have a title and also a brief description of the information it contains. This is the section where the data is presented; it is not the place to analyze the data. Discussion: This section is where you summarize what happened in your experiment. Here, you fully discuss and interpret the information. Do not simply explain the results you got; you must interpret them here: what do these results mean in relation to the knowledge we have about this subject? Did you get what was expected? If so, explain why you expected those results. If not, explain what may have happened. If there is anything about your experiment that you think could be improved upon, provide suggestions for doing so. Expect this section to be the longest and most in-depth. References: All references used should be included at the end of your lab report. Please cite the lab protocol (CJ Harendza, Enzyme Activity Lab, MCCC) and also your textbook. I am not looking for a particular citation format, and endnote numbers throughout the report are not necessary. Please refer to the unit calendar for the lab report due date.
