Then select one of the short stories listed below from the section “A Literature of Social and Cultural Challenge” and write a 500 word standard five paragraph essay that includes two outside sources.
Essay Topic:
How does the author use the protagonist (the main character) and/or the antagonist (the bad guy) to reflect on some aspect of the social or cultural challenges of the time in which the story takes place OR the time in which the author wrote the story?
Short Stories to Choose From:
“That Evening Sun” by William Faulkner
“An Angel on the Porch” by Thomas Wolfe
“The Jilting of Granny Weatherkill” by Katherine Anne Porter
“A Five Dollar Fight” by Richard Wright
Requirements
You are required to upload two separate documents – – an outline and the revised essay. Each document will be eligible for points for this assignment. Each document has specific requirements. Keep reading to see what they are!
Outline: Outline must contain the following SEVEN items:
Thesis statement in a single sentence. (The thesis is the main idea of your essay and will be the focal point you return to each time you write a body paragraph – asking yourself: Does this body paragraph directly relate back to my thesis statement? If so, excellent! If not, revise!)
Three supporting ideas/points. (Each one of these supporting ideas/points will be what you use as evidence to ‘defend’ your thesis.)
Three topic sentences. (Each topic sentence should take one of the three supporting ideas/points and be written so that it can be placed at the beginning of one of the three body paragraphs. Review earlier module material on paragraphs and topic sentences.)
Revised Essay: The revised essay must contain the following SEVEN items:
Introductory paragraph. The introductory paragraph should begin with a ‘hook’ or interesting sentence to capture the reader’s attention. This can be a startling statement related to the subject of the essay, a brief anecdote related to the subject of the essay, or even a quote from a famous person or authority on the subject of the essay. Next include some background to orient the reader to the topic. End the introductory paragraph with the thesis statement. The introductory paragraph should be approximately 5 – 6 sentences.
Three body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that clearly presents what the body paragraph will be about. Each of the three body paragraphs should be approximately the same length. This will give the essay a sense of balance. Avoid having one short paragraph, followed by a very long paragraph, and then another short one. Strive to have all three body paragraphs of equal length.
Concluding paragraph. This last paragraph should be brief. This is where you can summarize or wrap up the essay. Typically in a 500 word essay, the concluding paragraph can be approximately three sentences.
Two outside sources. Include two to three brief quotations in MLA format. Remember to follow the MLA rule of no more than 10% directly quoted material. That translates to no more than approximately 50 words in a 500 word essay.
Works Cited list that includes the two outside sources.
Revised final draft: This is your final version of the essay that has been revised for clarity, coherence, unity, and organization, edited, and proofread for errors. And finally, do one last proofread check that the entire essay is written in third person point of view.
Standard MLA format including the following:
Double-space entire essay
one inch margins all the way
12 pt font
required identification in upper-hand corner: Include your first and last name, the professor’s name, the class and date in the upper left-hand corner.
running headers with your last name and page number: MLA requires that each page of the essay include in the upper right corner a running header that gives your last name and the page number. Note that there is no punctuation between that last name and the page number, nor is the word page used or any abbreviation like p. or pp. included.
Word count for Essay: approximately 500 in five paragraphs which include an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
