Assignment: Application: Systems Theory

As noted in the Learning Resources, systems theory provides a meaningful and beneficial means of examining challenges in health care organizations. To do this effectively, however, it is essential to assess all system components, as some may be relatively healthy while others are problematic.

For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in a department or a unit within a health care organization. (Note: You may use the same problem you identified for the Discussion as long as it meets the criteria for this assignment.)

To prepare:

  • Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).
  • Reflect on your organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.
  • Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.
  • Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.
  • Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.
  • Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate. (Depending on the organization you have selected, you may have explored these in the Week 1 Discussion.)

 

Write a 3- to 5-page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

  • Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology. Include a description of inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback.
  • Describe the problem you identified within the department or unit using an open- systems approach, and state where the problem exists using the systems theory model (input, throughput, output, cycles of events, or negative feedback).
  • Based on this information, explain how you would address the problem as follows:
    • Formulate a desired outcome.
    • Identify goals and objectives that would facilitate that outcome.
    • Translate those goals and objectives into policies and procedures for the department or unit.
    • Describe relevant professional standards.
  • Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

    Hello Class, 

    In the ADN program in which I teach, our student use an app called Nursing Central on their phones. It has disease, drug and lab information readily available to them in the clinical area. When they first started to use it on their clinical rotations a few years ago, hospital staff were quite wary of this, thinking that the students were using their phones for personal purposes. Since then, I see nurses in both acute and long term care using their smart phones to look up patient related information. 

    What’s the policy where you work? Is staff use of personal devices getting in the way of patient care?

 I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT..BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS

 

Principalism is often refer to as the four principles approach to biomedical ethics which was originally developed by Thomas Beauchamp and James Childress (GCU, 2015). The four principle which includes autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence and justice have been the core of modern discussion and debate because giving favorable importance to autonomy. In my own opinion, I would rank the four principles as follows;

  1. Autonomy – because I respect for the autonomy of my patient’s right, in the sense that the patient has the capacity to act intentionally, with understanding, and without controlling influences that would mitigate against a free and voluntary act. This principle is the basis for the practice of “informed consent” of our patient in any medical procedure they undertake (McCormick & Min, 2015).
  2. Nonmaleficence – As a nurse, we have the duty and responsibility to cause no harm in our patient. Although as human, we are also bound to commit mistake This principle affirms the need for medical competence and fundamental commitment on our part to protect our patients from harm.
  3. Beneficence – As a health care providers, we have a duty to be of a benefit to the patient, as well as to take positive steps to prevent and to remove harm from the patient. These duties are rational and self-evident and are widely accepted as primary goals of medicine.
  4. Justice – As a nurse, we have the moral obligation to treat patient with respect and equally regardless of ethnicity, identity, race, age, gender, status, diagnosis and ability to pay.

As believer of God, I would have more emphasis of helping other people and do no harm to them and employs the right and just in making decision. As Christian, I would rank the four principles of ethics in the context of the Christian biblical narrative as follows;

  1. Beneficence – Following god’s teaching to love and help others who are in need because in every person represent God’ image. I think, this is most important teaching in Gospel of God.
  2. Nonmaleficence- As a Christian, we also taught not to cause no harm to other and all his creations,
  3. Justice – Gospel of the Lord, teach us not to cheat and be corrupted by materials things and be fair and just to everything we do as according to his teaching.
  4. Autonomy – Although, God gave people autonomy and independence to choose in verything we do, but it also commanded us to do what is right and just according to His commandments.
