 I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT..BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS

Every few minutes someone in America commits suicide. In North America, suicide is the third-leading cause of death among people 15 to 25 years olD. And note this tragic feature of American life: among children between 5 and 14 years of age, suicide is the sixth most common cause of death (Smedes, 2000). Meilaender puts it that “Suicide as a rational project expresses a desire to be only free and not also finite-a desire to be more like Creator not creature”. As a Christian I do not condone suicide at the same time I am not at liberty to judge one’s actions as a sin or not. It is not my place. The Bible says “thou shalt not judge”.

“Euthanasia, also known as assisted suicide, physician-assisted suicide (dying), doctor-assisted dying (suicide), and more loosely termed mercy killing, means to take a deliberate action with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable (persistent, unstoppable) suffering” (Nordqvist, 2016). Considering the fact that one of Christian principle is to relieve suffering, when it comes to assisting to take one’s life, it becomes a difficult discussion. Meilaender emphasized that, euthanasia cannot simply be termed as an extension of one’s private autonomy or a non-interventional act in a private choice, this is because it requires the participation of another person, thus making it a communal act. This is quite difficult for me in this profession especially when it come to the point of given morphine schedules. Medicine is there to  ease the suffering. All life is precious and God oversees all of it. Nevertheless, to classify suicide and euthanasia as sin to me lies with God.

2023 Nursing comment from post 2

Principalism especially in the context of bioethics in the United States has often been critiqued for raising the principle of 2023

Principalism, especially in the context of bioethics in the United States, has often been critiqued for raising the principle of autonomy to the highest place, such that it trumps all other principles or values. How would you rank the importance of each of the four principles? How do you believe they would be ordered in the context of the Christian biblical narrative?

First, I must address what each of the four principles are.

 1. Autonomy—agreement to respect another’s right to self-determine a course of action;

support of independent decision making (Beauchamp & Childress. 2009).

2. Beneficence- compassion; taking positive action to help others; desire to do good; core

principle of our patient advocacy (Beauchamp & Childress. 2009).

3. Nonmaleficence- avoidance of harm or hurt; core of medical oath and nursing ethics (Beauchamp & Childress. 2009)

4. Justice- refers to an equal and fair distribution of resources, based on analysis of benefits and burdens of decision. Justice implies that all citizens have an equal right to the goods distributed, regardless of what they have contributed or who they are. (Butts &Rich, 2008).

                In my opinion, Beneficence is the most important principle.  Most ethical theories have embraced various aspects of beneficence, and utilitarian theorists see beneficence as the foundation for causing the greatest benefit for all. If one is to take a positive action to help others and has the core principle to advocate what is good and just for others then the other principles seem to fall into place. Beneficence strives for the best care while embracing not doing anything harmful (Enright & Miyamoto, 2008).  If one acts in beneficence then it stands to reason that they would respect the persons autonomy, they would do no harm and justice would be maintained.  How would I rank each? beneficence, followed by autonomy, nonmaleficence and finally justice.

                In biblical terms, I feel that beneficence would again, be the most important principle. The reason I feel this way is because God gave his only son, for our benefit. Jesus died on the cross for our benefit. Everything that God and Jesus has done has been for the benefit of mankind. It is well known that in the bible, Matthew 25:36, states, I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’ I feel that God wants how we live to benefit others. Everything we do in our lives affects another person one way or the other. It is up to us to have it be a positive benefit to others.

Dealing with death can be traumatic and devasting for all involved and sometimes even lead one to question themselves. Bandman &Bandman (2002) states, ” Deciding what death is depends on one of two definitions: irreversible cessation of respiration and circulation or irreversible cessation of all functions of the brain ” (p. 260). I am an emergency room nurse so for me death is sometimes a daily occurrence. The hardest for me is when an infant or child dies. I guess I look at it as the beginning of life versus the person who has already lived a full life. When a child or infant dies in the emergency the entire staff becomes so overwhelmed with grief that they had to institute a debriefing where chaplains come and talk to the staff sometimes one on one because it is such a devastating time.

For me dealing with death on an almost daily basis has made me realize that it is inevitable and that preparations must be made and wishes would have to be made known to family and friends so when that time comes there will be no confusion or guilt as they make their decisions.

In my field of work, it is a constant dilemma for some families and sometimes a thug of war among them when it comes to making decisions regarding death and dying. I have seen families fall apart and even have physical fights regarding wishes of the dying person, therefore it is of utmost importance to have your wishes in writing and a trustworthy friend or family member placed in charge when one becomes incapable of making their own decisions.
