Term-Paper Assignment Cognitive Science: CSCI 3702, LING 3005, PSYC 3005, PHIL 3310

Fall 2017, Professors Kim and Rupert ! Format, Length, and Due Date: Your paper must be 2,500–4,000 words, excluding cover sheet (which is optional) and list of references. Include a word count on the first page of your paper. The paper must be typed in a twelve-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, pages numbered, and printed on only one side of the page. A hard copy of the paper is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, Dec. 14; also submit an electronic copy to the class D2L dropbox before coming to class on that day. ! Approach to the Paper: This is a research paper and should be the result of your independent investigation, which involves identifying resources and incorporating them into your paper. DO NOT focus, in your paper, on the assigned readings or lecture material. If your paper is simply a summary of course readings or material from lecture, you will get a very low grade, perhaps even a failing grade. At the same time, your paper should show an appreciation of the content of the assigned readings and lectures, where applicable; so, for example, you should cite assigned readings when they’re relevant, and you should not write things in your paper that show that you have not done the assigned reading. ! Topics and Resources: You may pursue a topic introduced in class or address a new topic in cognitive science. One way to select a topic is to find a single idea of interest in one of the assigned readings, and then read the articles cited in connection with that idea, and then read some of the material cited in those papers, and so on (in other words, follow the trail of citations). Or, you might find a topic by searching through relevant academic journals, such as Nature, Science, Trends in Cognitive Science, Cognition, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Cognitive Science, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, and Mind & Language. Read abstracts and skim through papers until you find a specific article that interests you, one that’s part of cognitive science, in particular. Also, consider finding resources either by searching library databases (PsycINFO, for example), Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com), or PhilPapers (looking in the appropriate categories – e.g., ‘philosophy of psychology’ or ‘artificial intelligence’), using key words or by following the trail of citations from the journal article that caught your interest. ! We have three definite criteria for the topic and content of your paper. First, the paper should not stray too far from mainstream cognitive science. Do not write a paper on, for example, ESP or reading auras. Talk to one of us if you’re not sure what counts as mainstream cognitive science. Second, the paper should take an interdisciplinary perspective on the topic of your choice. If you are a philosophy student, it’s fine to write a paper that deals primarily with philosophical issues and perspectives, but the argumentation of the paper should exploit experimental data or modeling from other areas of cognitive science. If you’re a psychology student oriented toward behavioral experiments, consider not only the behavioral literature, but also neuroscientific data or computational perspectives. Third, as resources, you should use articles published in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals that regularly publish work in cognitive science. Some of the most worthwhile journals are listed above, but there are many more (one list of

http://scholar.google.com)

Cognitive Science journals, ordered by degree of impact is here: .http://scholar.google.com/ citations?view_op=top_venues&hl=en&vq=soc_cognitivescience) Although books and book chapters can be very useful, we expect you to make substantive use of at least three refereed journal articles (that were not assigned reading for the course); the best papers typically use more than this. ! Structure: Regarding the structure of your paper, consider the following possibilities: (1) a paper that traces the development of a particular kind of theory or model (e.g., Baddeley and Hitch’s model of working memory), as it encounters apparently disconfirming data, is revised in response, and thus evolves over time, or (2) compare and contrast two or more competing theoretical perspectives on the same problem (e.g., is language acquisition driven primarily by innate resources?). Try not to pick too broad a topic. For instance, if you ask whether language learning is driven primarily by innate resources, don’t try to cover all dimensions of language acquisition; instead, you should focus on one particular aspect of the debate, for instance, patterns in the early acquisition of nouns. However you structure your paper, be sure you synthesize your material into a single narrative; your paper should take the form of a coherent essay, not a series of summaries of different articles you’ve read. ! Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will result in lowered grades and a referral to the Honor Code Council. You must express yourself in your own words. In other words, you must construct your sentences yourself, from scratch. Also, the paper you turn in must have been written specifically for this course. ! References: Be sure to give a citation when you directly quote the work of others or when you paraphrase their ideas. Feel free to use any standard system of citation: MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style. (It may be easiest simply to follow the format of one of the academic papers you read.) ! Generally speaking, quotations should be used sparingly. If you have a question about plagiarism, quotations, or references, please come talk to one of us.

Analysis and Recommendations Part I: Technological Gaps

This is 2 parts: An essay and a excel worksheet.

For the first milestone of your final project, you will compose an analysis of the mission statement of Nimble Storage, the storage company that is the focus of your case study: Nimble Storage: Scaling Talent Strategy Amidst Hyper-Growth. In your analysis, you will be asked to determine if the annual goals and objectives set by the company constitute an appropriate business practice for a company wishing to go global. You will also be asked to assess the technological gaps in the company.
In addition to composing this analysis, this milestone also requires you to begin populating an Excel spreadsheet: PESTEL Analysis Worksheet. In each milestone in this course, you will be asked to fill in a few rows of this spreadsheet based on individual countries/regions. This worksheet will be used as a visual aid to help you understand the data necessary to determine the steps Nimble Storage needs to take in order to go global. Each time you populate this worksheet (which you will do three times throughout the course), you will work through the characteristics of different countries/regions. Although this is separate from your milestone composition, you must upload the worksheet for review and instructor feedback as part of your milestone submission.
Prompt: For this milestone, complete Parts 1 and 2 below:

o Part 1: PESTEL Activity
Using the PESTEL Analysis Worksheet, populate the first two rows: United States and Brazil. Filling out these rows will help you visualize global values (such as each countrys cultural and political trends) and will assist you as you work toward completion of your final project.

o Part 2: Composition
Write a 3- to 4-page paper that assesses Nimble Storage, using the PESTEL analysis and Hofstedes four cultural dimensions as a guide.
Business Practice Analysis: In this part of the assessment, you will analyze the current business practices of the organization for how they operate globally. Then you will illustrate the potential benefits and challenges to the organization regarding its adoption of a more geocentric focus.
Recommendations: In this part of the assessment, you will compile a series of recommendations for the leadership of the organization regarding how the organization can adopt a more geocentric focus with its business practices.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. PESTEL Analysis Worksheet
a. Populate the first two rows (United States and Brazil) of the worksheet as specified in the prompt. Use your readings and resources to help you
assemble each row of the analysis. II. Business Practice Analysis

a. Determine gaps within the organizations current practices that are relevant to the human resources team of the organization from a geocentric perspective. What issues or problems are present regarding the organizations accommodations for global employees?
b. Determine gaps in the technological tools and structure of the organization that should be considered when working within a global structure.
c. Analyze the mission statement of the organization against the needs of a global organization. Are the annual goals and objectives appropriate
for a global company? Does the organization appropriately present itself as a global company?
III. Recommendations
a. Recommend strategies for accommodating current and future technological developments. How should the organization establish and maintain technology?
b. Recommend technological tools and improvements that could reduce global barriers between employees and other stakeholders. Be sure to justify your response.
c. Make revisions to the mission statement of the organization that will standardize organizational values across cultural lines. Be sure to justify your response.

Guidelines for Submission: Your paper must be submitted as a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and at least three sources cited in APA format. Separately, for your PESTEL Analysis Worksheet, you must complete the first two rows and submit the worksheet.

Fake news project

Instructions: For this project, you will find an online article in the popular press (online news sources,

blogs, e-magazines, e-newspapers, etc.) that makes a claim about a research finding in psychological

science. You will pair up with two partners (group of 3) to work on this project.

First, you will find a recent (within the past 3 months or less) online popular press article that reports

findings from psychological science. You will review the article, and then critically evaluate it to assess its

credibility. We will discuss the methods used in psychological science to assess knowledge claims when

we discuss the chapters on Critical Thinking and Research Strategies in Psychological Science. You should

apply your knowledge from those chapters and our discussions to make a sound judgment about the

knowledge claims in the online article and be prepared to justify your judgment.

Specifically, be sure to answer each part of the following questions to receive full credit, and write up your

responses to them in a short essay-style paper:

1. Do the authors make a claim for correlation or causation in their findings? What does the title of the article suggest (correlation or causation)? Why do you think so? What language do the authors

use in the article itself to indicate correlation or causation? Explain your answer. (4 points)

2. What evidence do the authors provide to support the claim? Do you think their claim is justified? Why or why not? (4 points)

3. What theoretical rationale do the authors provide to support the claim? Do you think their rationale is solid? Why or why not? (4 points)

4. Were the research methods explained in the article sound? Why or why not? Explain the methods and then critically assess how sound they were. (4 points)

5. Based on the soundness of the overall article, would you follow (or buy into) the authors’ claims or not? That is – is it “fake news” or not? Be sure to explain why you think so. (4 points)
