Choose one (1) of these environmental regulations, or another policy that interests you; then, research your chosen regulation or policy’s requirements and environmental and economic impacts.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Describe three (3) key elements of the regulation or policy you chose. Specifically, discuss who is affected and what actions they are required to undertake, including federal and state agencies and specific industries, and how these requirements are enforced.
  2. Assess three (3) effects this regulation or policy had on our environment. Next, quantify its effects, if possible, to analyze whether or not the regulation had the desired effect on the environment.
  3. Discuss three (3) economic effects of your chosen policy or regulation. Next, describe the direct costs of implementation, as well as the effect the regulation has had on economic growth. If possible, find a benefits/cost analysis that will provide you with objective analyses of this regulation’s economic impact.
  4. Speculate whether or not you believe that this policy or regulation has been successful overall. Next, debate whether or not your chosen policy or regulation has promoted environmental benefits or outweighed its economic costs. Lastly, determine whether you would recommend renewing this policy or regulation when it comes to its expiration date, or whether you should let the policy or regulation expire. Justify your response.

Within the next week please choose a topic for your research paper. If you have any difficulty choosing a topic please let me know and I will assign you a topic. Your topic is to be chosen from the list of topics found below you must clear your topic choice with me first before proceeding. Send me a classroom “Message” by the end of Week 2.

Here are a few suggested topics: Piracy (past and present), Port Security, Port Facility Operations, Maritime Transportation System, Transnational Organized Crime, United States Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection.

The topic I choose is Transnational Organized Crime

I would suggest including organizations close to home like the Mexican Cartels. Drug smuggling and human trafficking are two things that TOC’s are heavily involved in.

You are to prepare your paper in a word document (Times New Roman, Font 12-double space) using APA style format (“Resources” and APA info attached below). Your research paper should be 10-12 pages of content excluding your title page and reference list (“Abstract” required). A minimum of 10 outside references required. Additionally, you are to include a Title page and Bibliography page. Your research paper must be an original work and you cannot recycle a paper that you prepared and submitted to any other class (refer to your “student handbook” for the University plagiarism policy).

Turnitin:

When you submit your paper it will be automatically sent to Turnitin and checked for plagiarism. It is important that you closely review your Turnitin report and similarity score. No amount of copying is acceptable (allowance for references, footnotes, and quotes). Quotes should not consist of more than 10% of your content. I am looking for your own thoughts in your own words so I do not want to see excessive cited material. However, cited references used to support your work must be properly cited in APA style format.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
