Bio Chap 14 DQ’s

Biology: Choose 2 HUMAN genetic disorders to research.

Autism: Autism is a genetic disorder also known as “Autism Spectrum Disorder” or “ASD.” “According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.” Autism is developed in many ways from complications during birth and/or pregnancy to alcohol and drug usage while pregnant. The symptoms of autism range in many different ways. “Behavioral: inappropriate social interaction, poor eye contact, compulsive behavior, impulsivity, repetitive movements, self-harm, or persistent repetition of words or actions. Developmental: learning disability or speech delay in a child. Cognitive: intense interest in a limited number of things or problem paying attention. Psychological: unaware of others’ emotions or depression. Also common: anxiety, change in voice, sensitivity to sound, or tic.”

Cri Du Chat: Cri Du Chat is a genetic disorder that is extremely rare. It goes by many names, such as: “Cat cry syndrome”, “5p minus syndrome”, and “Chromosome 5p deletion syndrome.” While it can be inherited genetically, “Most cases of cri-du-chat syndrome are not inherited. The deletion occurs most often as a random event during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs or sperm) or in early fetal development. Affected people typically have no history of the disorder in their family.” There are many symptoms of this disorder. A list of the symptoms of cri du chat can be found here:https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/diseases/6213/cri-du-chat-syndrome.
