One of the most common questions the general public asks about intimate partner violence (ipv) is “Why does she stay?” Several important factors need to be mentioned in this regard. First, women do leave abusive relationships. In fact, they leave and return multiple times. (Be wary of any resource that quotes an exact or average number of times that survivors leave. The reality is that we really don’t know, other than it appears to be multiple times for many women.)

Second, when someone asks “Why doesn’t she leave?” they are making the very dangerous mistake of assuming that to leave a violent relationship will cause the violence to cease. According to the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family (1996), “Many people still believe that the problem of battering can be solved by separation, but the risk of serious or lethal violence may actually increase after separation” (39).

 

The greatest risk for serious injury or death from violence is at the point of separation or at the time when the decision to separate is made. Data from a U.S. Department of Justice national Crime Victimization Survey indicates that among women who were victims of violent assault by an intimate partner, women reported that the offender was an ex-spouse almost half as many times as they reported that the offender was a spouse” (American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family, 1996, p. 39). The reality is that for a large number of survivors to leave a violent relationship does not make things better, rather, it makes things worse. A third factor to be considered in this discussion involves the very nature of the question “Why does she stay?” Very rarely do people ask, “Why does he batter?, or “Why doesn’t he leave?” Many grassroots activists and feminists believe that to ask “Why does she stay?” is actually victim blaming and fails to hold the abuser accountable for his behavior.

In Module 1, Lawrence Green and his colleagues identified three types of factors that can affect the help-seeking process by either encouraging or discouraging action:

 

  • Predisposing factors – attitudes, perceptions, or beliefs that either facilitate or hinder personal motivation to act
  • Enabling  factors–factors that either help by their presence or hinder by their absence like the ability to obtain necessary assistance (limited facilities, inadequate personnel, lack of funds)
  • Reinforcing factors – characteristics of services or attitudes of caregivers that assist in decision-making like the feedback or attention received.

 

Linked below is the handout Barriers to Leaving which outlines numerous factors or “barriers” that should be considered when examining the difficulties in leaving an abusive relationship. This list of barriers can be combined with Green’s et. al. work to help explain the challenges that survivors face in their help-seeking process.

Instructions:

For this assignment, you will write a paper no less than 7 pages in length, not including required cover and Reference pages, describing a single personality theory from the course readings that best explains your own personality and life choices. You are free to select from among the several theories covered in the course to date but only one theory may be used.

Your task is to demonstrate your knowledge of the theory you choose via descriptions of its key concepts and use of them to explain how you developed your own personality. It is recommended that you revisit the material covered to date to refresh your knowledge of theory details. This is a “midterm” assignment and you should show in your work that you have studied and comprehended the first four weeks of course material. Your submission should be double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides of each page and should be free of spelling and grammar errors. It must include source crediting of any materials used in APA format, including source citations in the body of your paper and in a Reference list attached to the end. Easy to follow guides to APA formatting can be found on the tutorial section of the APUS Online Library.

Your paper will include three parts:

I. A brief description of the premise and key components of the theory you selected. You should be thorough and concise in this section and not spend the bulk of the paper detailing the theory, but rather just give enough of a summary of the key points so that an intelligent but uniformed reader would be able to understand its basics. If you pick a more complicated theory, you should expect explaining its premise and key components to take longer than explaining the same for one of the simpler theories but, in either case, focus on the basics and keep in mind that a paper that is almost all theory description and little use of the theory described to explain your own personality will receive a significant point deduction as will the reverse case of the paper being largely personal experience sharing with little linkage to clearly described key theory components.

II. A description of how your chosen theory explains your personality and life choices with supporting examples.

III. A description of the limitations of the theory in explaining your personality or anyone else’s.
NOTE: Although only your instructor will be reading your paper, you should still think about how much personal information you want to disclose. The purpose of this paper is not to get you to share private information, but rather to bring one of the theories covered in the course to life by applying it to your own real world experience.

1) The first step is to devise a very carefully constructed one sentence Research Question. You are to choose your own topic. If you do not already have a topic in mind, please focus on Argentina, Chile, Brazil, or a Central American country. You may also wish to cover a theme rather than a country. Do not pose a future-tense question.

Limit your question in terms of time-frame and subject, so that the question is narrow enough to address thoroughly in a 15 page research paper.

Or: What have been the major political impacts in Venezuela of black market currency manipulation since 2012? 2. ) 2) Once you have a research question, use any web library and obtain 15 ACADEMIC JOURNAL sources, the higher quality, the better. Strive for ideological balance in the sources, provide more than one perspective to your topic. Make sure your sources are sufficiently diverse to incorporate a debate into your paper. 3) Provide an annotated bibliography. That is, provide a bibliography of the sources you are using (alphabetized in accepted bibliographical style), with a one-paragraph annotation for each source. Each citation will address four components: the thesis; supporting arguments; methodology (address quality of sources and coherence of the piece); and ideology, or bias.

The citation should be in complete sentences with careful writing. Do not write more than five sentences (one sentence each for the thesis, supporting arguments and ideology, and two sentences for the methodology commenting on sources and coherence ).

North, Liisa. Understanding Central America (Toronto: Between the Lines, 1989).
Norths central argument is that US policy to Central America is misconceived and runs counter to the interests of Central Americas majority population. She notes that US military policy is backfiring by causing anti-Americanism, and that US policy is causing a deterioration of living standards in Nicaragua and El Salvador in particular. Regarding methodology, North uses many primary sources such as interviews, government documents, and UN reports. Her argument is logical and well-presented. North writes from a socialist perspective.

4) Provide a detailed outline of what would be your research paper. The outline is to include:
a) Your complete three sentence introduction: thesis; statement of method; statement of significance;
b) The topic sentence of each paragraph for what would be a 15 page paper;
c) After each topic sentence, list the relevant authors and page numbers in parentheses that you would include if you were developing that topic sentence into a paragraph.
