2 short response papers

In two of these papers, you will analyze a single primary source (or 2-3 closely related sources, but beware of taking on more than you can cover in 500 words) of your choice (chosen from the assigned readings). The main goal of this paper is to explain the significance of the source – what do we learn from it about a bigger question in Chinese history? That is to say, a paper that merely summarizes a source will not receive an A; you will have to show your reader why your chosen source matters. In the other two papers, you will analyze one of the journal articles or book chapters (note: this does not include textbook chapters) assigned as weekly reading. You will succinctly summarize and evaluate the author’s argument. Your summary should not simply repeat the information in the article, but explain the article’s purpose – of what is the author trying to convince us? Make sure to devote some space to an evaluation of the article’s argument – does the evidence the author provides support his or her point? Does the argument make sense in light of the other things you’ve learned that week (whether in lecture, the textbook, or primary source readings)?

Discussion: Metaphorical Reflections

There is a simple formula for endings that can be applied to ending this course: Look back, look forward, then say goodbye. You can look back upon the total experience of this course from the beginning to the end and become aware of what changes, if any, have occurred in your own thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and relationships as a result. Mindful reflection allows you to look forward to choose which gains you will work to maintain and make a plan to do so.

In this closing Discussion, you apply a powerful multisensory counseling technique—the metaphor. The course media offers an example of the use of metaphors in counseling. Metaphors evoke both emotional learning and visual imagery; metaphors decrease defensiveness, as they invite people to shift their thinking to a new perspective. Sharing metaphors with your classmates builds a clearer understanding among you.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on Weeks 1–10. Evaluate the impact of this Introductory Skills course on your personal and/or professional interactions.
  • Next, find a metaphor which matches your experience. For example, was it like walking on a tightrope? Eating chocolate cake? Walking in a forest at night? Crossing a bridge? Metaphors allow creativity.

b) Stem cells. Your friend had a spinal cord injury after a bad car accident. The medical team has decided that he is a good candidate for a clinical trial using stem cell therapy. Your friend has not had a biology course since high school, so you decide to write him a letter sharing your knowledge of stem cells. Include in your letter a description of the biology of stem cells and how these cells are unique from other cells. Contrast the different types of stem cells, including pros and cons of each. Explain how stems cells are can be used to treat diseases and injury, with special focus on spinal cord injuries. Conclude with your own opinion. The following website from NIH regarding stem cell research will be very helpful: http://stemcells.nih.gov/index.asp.

c) Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) and tar sands (oil sands).  With society’s dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels, the oil & gas industry is turning to the use of hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands to extract natural gas and oil respectively.  A friend asks you “What’s all this controversy in the news about fracking and tar sands?”  Briefly explain to your friend how hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands are used to obtain these fossil fuels. Then, in more detail, describe the environmental problems that may result from these processes and why they are controversial. Issues that may be addressed involves, but are not limited to, water, air and soil pollution, effects on human health, effects on other species and natural ecosystems.
