Explain two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards in education. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions. Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a qualitative approach.

Things I Should Have Said – Challenging Social Inequality

Often times in our daily lives we encounter situations in which we observe (and sometimes even take part in) social inequality. In class you will view a short video titled “Things I Should Have Said,” which depicts such a situation. After viewing this video, you should reflect on a situation in your own life in which you encountered social inequality, and in hindsight what you wished you had said or done differently. Then make your own video, similar to the video shown in class. Your video can be no more than 5 minutes long.

Here is a link to the video if you want to watch it again:

HYPERLINK “http://vicariousfilms.dawnalden.com/portfolio/things-i-should-have-said/http://vicariousfilms.dawnalden.com/portfolio/things-i-should-have-said/

Your video should have these four elements:

Depict a situation in which you witnessed social inequality enacted (either through a re-creation like the one shown in the film, through photographs, through narration only, or whatever means you choose).

Include a sociological explanation of how the situation constituted social inequality, and not just a personal trouble.

Include an explanation of why you responded in the way that you did

Either what you think, in hindsight, would have been a more effective response to the situation, or why you think successfully challenging the situation on an individual level would not have been effective.

You will be graded based on the following criteria:

Explaining social inequality: 25 points

Explaining why the situation was an example of social inequality, and not just an unfortunate incident or an example of someone being mean.

Should use at least two (but ideally three) concepts from the textbook, lecture, or recitation materials.

Identifying sociological mechanisms for maintaining inequality: 20 points

Explaining sociological dynamics that “normalize” inequality and/or keep people from challenging inequality

Should use at least one (but ideally two) concepts from the textbook, lecture, or recitation materials.

Analyzing possibilities from a sociological perspective: 15 points

Identifying what you could have done differently, why you think it would not be possible to do things differently to effectively challenge the situation

Should include ideas on the relationship of agency to structure

You are the HR manager of an organisation which operates 16 fast food outlets. Design a detailed questionnaire you could use to seek information from the managers of each outlet to determine their human resources needs.

The questionnaire should demonstrate that you have considered the areas where human resources might be needed in a fast food organisation and should not include generalised questions like:

What are the most significant actions HR can take to help you meet your business goals?

What should HR be doing that it is not doing now?

What is HR doing now that it should not be doing?
