short business discussion

List six possible companies and their cultural/diversity issues. For each possible company, write a paragraph about the company and their cultural/diversity issue. (apx 150 words each paragraphs)

Topic Requirements

1. Choose a company that has or had a cultural/diversity issue.

2. Pick a cultural/diversity issue that has publicly available data so that you can find enough references (minimum of five).

3. Make sure you can articulate the cultural/diversity issue clearly.

Here are some examples:

  • Walmart lack of females in leadership roles.
  • Twitter, Apple, Google all have a lack of diversity (gender and race) in leadership roles. Other tech companies also have the same issues.
  • Detroit Public Schools lack of funds and basic needs being met in schools.
  • Flint Water Crisis issue was left ignored for too long, most likely would not have unfolded the same way if it happened in Birmingham.
  • Abercrombie & Fitch lack of diversity in models, employees, and sizes.
  • Various police departments where people of color have been shot by white officers.
  • Coach store fired an employee after she gained weight.
  • Hooters discriminates against women who do not meet a very strict appearance criterion.

500 words please

This past week we have been focusing on gender. Gender is a fundamental social division. All around us we see differences between men and women (and girls and boys). The way they dress. The activities they engage in. What they say. What they want out of life. We see gender differences in the college classroom — who tends to major in what subjects? We see gender differences at the workplace — who tends to hold positions of power and authority? We see gender differences in the home — who tends to do the majority of housework? These social arrangements, which create and sustain gender differences, end up having powerful effects on the lifestyles and life chances of individuals.

You will be given two possible essay topics to write about. You have to choose one of them. The two possibilities are:

ESSAY OPTION 1
Are we ever not doing gender? From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, it seems like we are constantly doing gender. For this essay, I want you to walk me through a small segment of your day (when you wake up, when you walk to class, when you eat lunch, when you shop, when you drive or ride the bus, when you go out on a date, when you attend religious ceremonies, when you watch movies with friends, etc). Do not describe your whole day, but rather, choose some small segment (a strip) of your life to describe. During that small segment of your day, in what ways are you doing gender? How are you displaying your gendered identity? Given the situation you find yourself in, how are you conforming — or not — to gendered expectations of behavior?

ESSAY OPTION 2
In class on Friday, we watched a TED Talk by Tony Porter, where he focused on what he calls “The Man Box.” According to Porter, what is The Man Box? What are its core elements? Why are men afraid of getting outside of The Man Box? When Porter says, “my liberation as a man is tied to your liberation as a woman,” what do you think he means by that?

As you write up your response, please reference and integrate into your essay the reading by West and Zimmerman “Doing Gender” and/or Lorber’s “Night to His Day”

Your finished essays must be 500-600 words in total.

Running head: CHILDREN AND CRITICAL THINKING 1

Running head: CHIDREN AND CRITICAL THINKING

Abstract

Everyday children must decide for themselves about what is a reliable source of information. They must critically evaluate a source, be it a cartoon watched on television or a conversation held with another child or adult. Children must also determine if a source is reliable and credible or lacking in real information and thus risky, then think critically about the information that is given to them. Heyman’s (2008) meta-analytic study explores how critical thinking skills can be taught to children and defines critical thinking and analyses how early and how well these critical thinking skills develop in children. Heyman (2008) also explores how social experiences shape the development of these skills, including a comparison of responses in Chinese and American children. The researcher (Heyman, 2008) hopes that information from this study and prior studies discussed in this article, can be used by parents as a means for guiding their children along a path towards critical thinking.
