For these assignments, you will present and write a formal proposal. A proposal is an offer to solve a problem or fulfill a business or organizational need. The goal is to persuade, so it’s important that you analyze your audience and deliver your proposal to persuade them to accept your ideas. The assignment is complex, with five separate assignments and each builds on the one before it. You are expected to use feedback from each assignment to improve on the next. The assignments are designed to guide you through the development process.

Part 2: Preliminary Research

It’s important that you evaluate each source you will use to make sure it’s credible and useful for your purpose. You will submit a list of three sources you plan to use:

  1. One source you will use to assess your audience’s position, concerns, motivations, etc.
  2. One source you will use to identify the need/problem that your proposal addresses
  3. One source you will use to analyze what other companies/organizations are doing in relation to your idea (i.e. a “market analysis”).

You will also address the following to explain what key information you’ll get from the source and why the source is credible:

  • A brief summary of the source.
    • What are the main arguments/ideas? If someone asked you about the content in this source, how would you answer?
  • A brief assessment of the source.
    • Verify that the source is credible by analyzing and explaining what makes the source authoritative, what makes the source’s information and/or methodology reliable, and what the source’s intentions or agenda may be in publishing the information.
    • Reference the following handout for further explanation on how to assess sources: Research 101 – Evaluating SourcesA brief reflection on how/why you will use this source for your proposal.

    • For each source, include a citation using APA style. Beyond that citation, all info you provide should be in complete sentences. Please use the following template to compartmentalize and document the necessary details: Proposal Research Submission – Template.docx

As chief of police, you are in negotiations with the union, representing officers within your department. After a heated discussion, you lose your temper and make comments that you feel were out of line. You have been known to be very supportive of officers within your department in the past. One of the issues during the negotiating session was the use of bulletproof vests for road patrol. Based on your research and talking with chiefs in other departments, you feel that the wearing of vests should be required of all officers in your department, as opposed to the current policy of leaving it up to the individual officer’s discretion. You direct your secretary to type up a memo for your signature and have her post it on the bulletin board in the squad room.

You then leave for a 2-week vacation. The memo states: “Effective immediately, bulletproof vests will be issued and worn by all road patrol officers, beginning next week. By order of the Chief of Police.” When you return from your vacation, you find that a grievance has been filed based on your memo.

Based on your readings of the material in the text and using credible research on the Internet, respond to the following:

  • Identify and discuss any problem(s) that might come about as a result of the communication process between the chief of police and the patrol division.
  • Do you believe that the communication process utilized by the chief of police was an effective way of communicating this information to the officers? Why or why not?
  • How important is timing in the communication process? Be specific.
  • Identify and discuss some of the major barriers to effective communication between unions and administration.
    • How would you overcome these barriers? Explain in detail.
  • What channels of communication would you utilize to implement this change in policy?
    • How would you effectively implement these channels? Explain in detail.

Appreciation/Advocacy Letter

Write a letter to a business, school newspaper, politician, local leader, organization or group regarding LGBTQ+ issues. Would you write the letter in praise of their stance and policies regarding LGBTQ issues or, conversely, would you write to raise awareness and advocate? You can write to anyone in the world but I do ask that they be a real person or business.

governing transport of mass, momentum, and energy in moving fluids. CFD has become an indispensable tool for many engineers. Even though the impetus to its development was initially provided by some sections within the aeronautics and aerospace industry, it has grown to become an essential tool in a range of other design intensive industries such as the automotive, power generation, chemical, nuclear, and marine industries, to cite a few.
