The Project Manager as Scrum Master

In Lesson 9, the matter of leading agile teams is discussed generically in terms of the concept of servant-leadership. Its also covered specifically with regard to how the concept is exemplified in the Scrum Master role. Any organization which fully implements agile and creates self-managed teams has to deal with the matter of finding people to properly lead them. If Scrum is to be used, someone must successfully fulfill the role of Scrum Master. Remember, the role includes serving the product owner, the development team and the sponsoring organization. It requires mastery of Scrum, a great deal of soft skills and most of all, servant-leadership.
The module content describes the Scrum Master role in detail and notes its key aspects. It raises the question of what kind of resources in an organization should be appointed as Scrum Masters. It highlights multiple options, including that of the traditional project manager. This two-part exercise is intended to help students understand the issues which must be considered when selecting a Scrum Master and focuses on whether traditional project managers can be expected to fill that role capably.
Part 1
In this team-based in-class discussion, each team will discuss the suitability of assigning the Scrum Master role to project managers who have exclusively used traditional management approaches and predictive life cycles to complete their projects. Your discussion should address these question:
    What are the advantages or opportunities for the project?
    What are the disadvantages or threats to the project?
    What adjustments might a project manager need to make in order to succeed in a Scrum Master role?
Each team is expected to use the worksheet at the end of this document to record your answers to these questions and upload a copy to the resource folder created for this session.
Part 2
Each student will prepare and submit a one to two page paper using the assignment template which will provide the students own answer to the question of whether project managers would make good Scrum Masters. Students may rely on the answers compiled during the team discussion but are also free to offer additional points based on their own investigation or experience.
You may relate any similar situations which you may have encountered in your own career, any previous course youve taken, or even integrate sources selected from a trade journal, newspaper or magazine article, book or web-based source. As always, you should describe assumptions and any background information about such situations in your paper. If you do reference a third-party source, please be sure to list its name and provide a link to it if it is available on the Internet or in the Bobst Librarys digital archives.
There is no single right answer to this question. Your grade will be based on the depth and clarity of your analysis of the question posed in the assignment as well as how well you express your own opinion and justify it.
Submit this assignment in the designated area in NYU Classes by 11:55 PM on April 25th.
Each written assignment for this course must be word processed, have a 12-point font size, be double spaced and submitted on the scheduled due date. Reports and/or papers that are submitted after the due date will be automatically reduced in score by 20% before they are read. All written reports must be submitted with a cover sheet, using the template provided for the course. Failure to include a cover sheet will result in an automatic reduction in points. Exponential Growth In Module 4, you were introduced to the concept of exponential functions that can be used to model growth and decay. Recall what you learned in The Number e lecture. In this exercise, you will use a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to calculate the exponential growth of a population of your choosing. (If you use the linked spreadsheet below, it is recommended that you consider relatively small populations and not those of entire nations.) Click here to open the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that you will use to perform the calculations for this assignment. In the spreadsheet, perform the following operations: 1.Input a population value into the box next to Initial Population on the spreadsheet. This population should be anything such as the people, animals, microorganisms, or plants. 2.Input a rate of growth for your population into the box next to Rate 1. Since we are interested in a positive annual percent growth rate per year, this number should be greater than zero percent. Be sure to input this number in the form of a decimal. 3.Repeat the above procedure for Rate 2 and Rate 3. Make sure that the values you select differ by two percent. The Chicago Bears stadium is also a great asset for the local community because of the games and the number of football legions that have played and became hall of fame inductees. Thousands of tourist add locals attend the games every year.
I live close to downtown and because of those two attractions and many more the neighborhood is well protected and kept clean, also more money comes on the area for the many small businesses that are in the area as well. Its always something to do and the night clubs are really nice and respectable. The economy is in a good place because more people can afford to visit and enjoy themselves without the worry of not bring able to afford the entrainment.

My husband was born and raised in Chicago so I have been there a couple of times. I enjoy visiting and there are still several attractions that I want to visit the next time I come. I am surprised that you did not mention the Taste of Chicago. I have not had the opportunity to attend one but I do know that people travel from all around the country to visit for that weekend. I have been in Chicago during the Taste and it is ridiculous the number of tourists that are there. Another location that I would think would draw a big crowd now is Hyde Park. I personally made it my business to visit there after the 2008 election. I spent maybe about $700 that weekend (the restaurants are awesome and I lived in the gourmet popcorn shop). I even toured the city comparing the best italian combos (an idea I got from the Ultimate Food Wars show on the travel channel). I have not been to a Bears, Sox, Cubs, or Bulls game yet but I have been to the Navy Pier and I really enjoyed it. You are lucky to live in a city with so many attractions and things to do.

I live in Augusta, Georgia and there are very few tourist attractions here. We are located on the Georgia/South Carolina border with Atlanta being 130 miles west and Columbia being 75 miles east. These two locations draw most of the tourism. We do have the Masters Golf Tournament in April. This year’s Masters has had a lingering affect on the economy. Having had dignitaries here for the Masters, The leadership at Starbucks has decided to open its first GA manufacturing plant in Augusta which will add 140 jobs and $172 million to the local economy.

The first tourist attraction is right in my hometown Oshkosh, WI. It is the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture. The EAA AirVenture has planes such as Warbirds, Tomahawks, and the Invaders. The planes fly over all today and into the evening and they fly in formation. The EAA AirVenture is great for the local economy, hotels are packed, bars run specials and restaurants are open early just for EAA customers. The EAA directors even hirer people to help run stands, clean up the grounds, and show people around.

In Augusta, the unfavorable effects of tourism are petty crimes such as fights and shoplifting, and traffic which is the worst. There is really only one way in and out of Augusta, highway I-20. Since the airports are in Atlanta and Charlotte, patrons of the Masters tournament have to drive in from these cities thus practically crippling travel into and out of Augusta. the traffic is so bad that even residential streets are open to Masters traffic. This is why the schools are closed during the Masters and most residents leave town.

I have to agree with the textbook that the favorable noneconomic effects is local pride. I live in Oshkosh, WI and every year over the 4th of July we have what is called, Sawdust Days. Sawdust Days has the normal things like rides, food stands, beer tents, and music. But there is also culture, Buckskinnner Traders & History Camp. Buckshinner camp started in 1840’s with muzzleloaders, bow and arrows, and tomahawks. Now there is so much more hand made tents, cloths, purses, wallets, and rugs that are all made by the Indians.
