response to each question should be approximately 900 words.

You will be graded on content as well as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. You must therefore construct essays that are well written and free of misspellings.

1) While combatants are rarely the only causalities of war, over the last several decades many conflicts have seen the intentional targeting of civilians. Indeed, violence against civilians has taken extreme forms. In the cases of Peru, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, why did insurgent groups choose to target civilians, and, just as important, how did their targeting of civilians affect the wars in question? Use examples from the lectures, Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone, and the films Pray the Devil Back to Hell and War Don Don.

2) One of the greatest conundrums for powerful militaries is how to counter small, decentralized insurgent groups who rely on guerrilla tactics. Thus, counterinsurgency methods used by conventional armies are often as diverse as the guerrilla tactics of the groups they are attempting to neutralize. What counterinsurgency tactics have conventional militaries employed and what effects have these tactics had on their respective wars? Focus on Algeria, Afghanistan (with emphasis after 2001), and Iraq. Use examples from the lectures, Endgame, The Rise of ISIS,

PSY330 Columbia Southern Memories in A Stream of Consciousness Essay

Humanities

Instructions

Unit IV introduced you to the work of William James. James was the first to describe consciousness as a stream, a continuous succession of experiences. He saw the most significant function of consciousness to be the role it played in selecting what to pay attention to.

James saw the stream of consciousness as an unending parade of thoughts, feelings, images, ideas, sensations, conceptions, and emotions that appear before our conscious awareness and then pass away.

For this assignment you will experiment with your own stream of consciousness.

Write about the following prompts:

  • Discuss a very early childhood memory.
  • Were there childish words like “moo-cow” that were used in your family?
  • What were several obsessions or preoccupations you had when you were in fourth or fifth grade?
  • What did you worry about?
  • What ideas kept recurring?
  • What things did you always do?
  • What words particularly fascinated you?
  • What subjects did you like in school? What memories are associated with those subjects?
  • What books or games were your mainstays?
  • What sayings of people in your family influenced you?
  • What did your mother always say?
  • What did your father always say?
  • Your Aunt Mary?
  • What did your teacher do one day?
  • What painful thing happened in school?
  • What especially happy moment can you recall?
  • Discuss other particularly cherished or embarrassing memories you have from childhood.

Please note, you do not have to give a complete response to all 10 questions. Let these questions be a guide to following your stream of consciousness rather than a strict template.

Now that you have written down a stream-of-consciousness response to the questions above, reflect on your response by asking why you remember these things and not other things? Do these memories reveal anything about yourself or tell you who you are? Have you discovered something about yourself by looking at them?

Write up these memories and your reflection on these memories in a stream-of-consciousness essay. Also, make sure to provide an introduction which introduces and summarizes James’s concept of personal consciousness, changes in consciousness, and continuity of thought.

Your assignment must be at least one page in length not including the title and reference pages, use at least one source such as the textbook or an article from the CSU Online Library, and use APA style formatting throughout.

Textbook:

Frager, R., & Fadiman, J. (2013). Personality and personal growth (7th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.

-in-at-least-1000-words-typed-in-proper-APA-format

-in-at-least-1000-words-typed-in-proper-APA-format

In at least 1000 words typed in proper APA format (including a 12-point font, double spacing, a title page, a reference page, in-text citations, a running header, page numbers, and an abstract page), you will write a review on any psychological disorder (can be an anxiety disorder, a mood disorder, a personality disorder, a somatoform disorder, a dissociative disorder, or even schizophrenia) of your choice.

One friendly piece of advice here is to choose a specific disorder versus a category of disorders. For example, instead of trying to do your essay on all personality disorders, you might choose just one personality disorder, such as avoidant personality disorder. That should make the paper more manageable.

First, you should discuss what the disorder is (general description, types if different types exist, symptoms), and how one gets the disorder (possible causes, risk factors).

Second, you should choose four of the perspectives listed in the textbook–psychodynamic, humanistic, behavioral, cognitive, group, biological–and discuss how a psychologist/doctor from each perspective would treat a patient with your disorder.

Part of this assignment will require you to enter the Grantham library. You should consider contacting the librarian (well before the due date) for help if you do not understand what peer-reviewed sources are or if you do not understand how to use the library functionally at Grantham.

You must include two peer-reviewed sources from an electronic journal within your essay, using at least some information from each of these sources within your writing. These sources should come from the Grantham library. You may use other resources, but at least two of your sources must come from the library and be peer-reviewed sources.
