Before you delve into issues and controversies in survey research, it is important to understand what survey research is. Survey research is a science and a systematic approach to gathering data (information) for the purpose of explaining, describing, and predicting variables and variable relationships for a sample that is representative of a population of interest. A survey is a scientific tool that is commonly used in both quantitative and qualitative research. In a survey, researchers generally assess attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, demographics, and other operationally defined and measurable constructs and variables.

Describing survey research as systematic implies that researchers use optimal research design, data collection, and data analytic strategies. Although survey research sounds straightforward, ongoing issues and controversies exist. Consider, for instance, whether it is ever possible to completely eradicate interviewer variance or implement standardized interviewing.

For this Discussion, select one major controversy in survey research, and consider the major positions on the issue. Then, determine your current stance regarding the issue and how you would support that position with current literature.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a description of one major controversy in survey research, including major positions on the issue. Then provide your current position regarding the issue. Justify your response with references to the Learning Resources and other peer-reviewed articles.

This multimedia presentation will satisfy CO: 3 Apply international legal norms within the context of international relations

For this project you will choose an international human rights NGO and a human rights issue. You will then create a video in which you simulate testifying in front of the UN Human Rights Commission. As we have discussed actors such as NGOs, epistemic communities, and government representatives must work to apply legal norms within the context of current world politics. The videos give you a good example of this. If you would like to have someone else assist you by playing the role of the UN member or members and interrupting you, that is fine. However, that is certainly not required.

Your video presentation should be five minutes in length, demonstrate an understanding of the human rights issue, an awareness of the difficulty of applying international norms to the case, and an ability to communicate it effectively. Please click on the Media Gallery link on the left for access to Kaltura which will allow you to upload videos into the classroom. You can take the video with the webcam function in Kaltura or using your cell phone.

If you wish to address something other than human rights, you may make a proposal to the professor. However, you will need to already have in mind the issue and the appropriate commission or committee. Your professor will not provide this information for you.

The U.S. Supreme Court receives around 7,000+ appeals each year, the majority of which are disposed of when the Court decides not to hear the case because of the subject matter, or if the issues presented are not significant enough to merit court review. The decision to hear a case is made when the justices meet to review all of the 7,000+ appeals. In order for all the justices to hear an appeal, the case must pass a screening known as the “Rule of Four.” This means that at least four of the nine justices must agree that the case has constitution merit or presents issues of national importance. If a case receives four or more votes from the justices, it is placed on the docket and scheduled to be heard. Annually, only about 100 or so cases pass the “Rule of Four” and are placed on the docket for an opinion.
