Background:

Evolution occurs in all living organisms from the smallest bacterial cells to the most complex animals. In bacterial cells evolution occurs rapidly in response to environmental pressures due to their simple genome and rapid reproduction rates. In this assignment you will explore the evolution in bacterial cells in relation to the development of resistance to antibiotic drugs.

Choose a bacterium that has become resistant to multiple antibiotics. Consult the resources for additional information.

Create a multimedia presentation wherein you address the following points:

Give a brief overview of the chosen bacterium including the genus and species. What disease(s) does the bacterium cause in humans?
Briefly explain how the bacterium has evolved to become resistant to antibiotics.
How is natural selection involved in the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria?
How do antibiotics reduce bacterial biodiversity?
Given what you have learned, how do you think the medical community should address the problem of antibiotic resistance?

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Conclusion

  1. A minimum of two paragraphs in which you provide:
    1. A clear restatement of the thesis, in new language, and a summary of the best evidence you presented to prove your thesis.
    2. In the case you did not prove your thesis or found it lacking, you should discuss this here.
    3. If relevant, a personal testimony or anecdote, which has its connection to your thesis explained well.
    4. Recommendations for future research; additional questions to consider; calls to action; solutions to problems presented; and, any other materials deemed relevant to the topic and your thesis.

Works Cited

MLA-formatted Works Cited:

  1. All sources organized alphabetically by author’s last name, then title.
  2. If there is no author, then alphabetical by the title.
  3. A minimum of six book/eBook and/or database sources — this number does not include the citations for the required images.
