Reaching out a Solution

This assignment is designed to assist you in developing a thoughtful process for advocating about an issue as a nurse, from identifying a problem that needs to be solved through articulating a process for doing so.

This assignment consists of answering each of the questions listed below from the “Political Analysis and Strategies” chapter of your course textbook. Write each question as a new topic area; then follow with a paragraph or two to answer the question. Be sure to use APA guidelines for writing style, spelling and grammar, and citation of sources, if any used. This project should be no longer than 4 pages.

Let us assume that you are a school nurse in a high school. At a recent school athletic event, a spectator suffered a cardiac arrest in the stands. A coach of the home team went into the high school to fetch the automatic emergency defibrillator (AED) only to find out that it was not readily available. In the meantime, an emergency squad arrived and resuscitated the spectator. On Monday morning, you learn of the absence of the AED only to find out that it had been locked in the custodian’s closet. Reflect on the following questions outlined in the “Political Analysis and Strategies” chapter:

  • What is the issue?
  • Is it my issue, and can I solve it?
  • Is this the real issue or merely a symptom of a larger one?
  • Does it need an immediate solution, or can it wait?
  • Is it likely to go away by itself?
  • Can I risk ignoring it?
  • What are the possible solutions? Are there risks to these solutions?
  • What steps would you need to take in order to solve the issue?
  • Does anyone else at the school need to be involved in the solution?
  • Where is the power leverage in the school to reach the preferred solution?

Reaching a solution requires the use of power vested in the nurse. Review Box 9-1 (Sources of Power) and determine which type(s) of power the school nurse has in this situation. State your reasons for your answer.

Case Study 2

CC: “irritable and forgetful”

HPI: Mrs. White, a 78-year-old married woman, is brought to the office of her primary care provider by her husband because of increasing forgetfulness and irritability over the past 3 months. Mr. White claims that his wife has had problems for several years now, but has just gotten “worse in her memory” in the past few months. She recently misplaced her purse and accused her son of stealing it.

On three occasions, she left the stove on and boiled a pot dry, nearly causing a fire. She recently put a container of ice cream into the washing machine instead of into the freezer and her husband did not discover it for more than a week. Mrs. White claims her family wants to take her money and leave her with nothing. “No matter what they say, there is nothing wrong with me,” she states.

Past Medical History (PMH) includes: hypothyroidism, treated with Synthroid, and successful treatment of breast cancer approximately 15 years prior. She also takes over-the-counter ibuprofen for chronic lower back pain and occasional Benadryl to help her sleep at night.

Objective data: Her physical examination is within normal limits.

To prepare:

By Day 3

Post an explanation of whether you suspect the patient in the case study you selected is presenting with dementia, delirium, or depression and why. Then, explain how you would further evaluate the patient in the case study based on medical history, current drug treatments, and the way the patient presented. Include whether you would modify drug treatments, use additional assessment tools, and/or refer the patient to a specialist.

2023 Nursing White Paper

White Paper on Nursing Proposed Increase for Nurse to Patient Ratios Length 2000 3000 words Graphics at least three 2023

White Paper on Nursing; Proposed Increase for Nurse to Patient Ratios

Length: 2000-3000 words  Graphics: at least three graphics, two of which have to be original  Format in Citing and Listing Sources: APA  Number and of Sources: at least five sources

How to Organize the White Paper: Please include the following sections in your white paper:  Executive Summary  Introduction  Previous Approaches  New Findings  Conclusion  References

In the Executive Summary, summarize your research and your purpose. The executive summary should be a stand-alone document. It should be written in such a way that a busy executive could read the executive summary and know exactly what the paper is about without reading the rest of the paper.

In the Introduction, you lay the groundwork for your readers for the details that will be introduced in the white paper. If you need to define any terms, you will do so here. You might share an anecdote or illustration to describe why this topic is important.

In the Previous Approaches section, you will describe the approaches or strategies that have been previously used or are currently used on the topic. For example, if your white paper is being written to advertise a new taxi service in your area, you might review what transportation services are provided now. You could show the challenges or problems that the current services involve. In this section of the white paper, your use of sources will be very important. You should integrate research to show that the problems you have identified exist.

In the New Findings section, you present perhaps the most important information in the paper. In this section, you will describe the findings of your research and relate these findings to the purpose of your report. You will not only provide data and research, but you will also explain the data and research and why it is relevant to your report’s topic. For example, if your white paper is being written to advertise a new taxi service in your area, you might review what transportation services are provided now and show why the new taxi service fills a need that the current set of transportation services does not fill or solves a problem that the current set of transportation services does not solve. You will provide data and evidence for why the new taxi service has promise in solving the problems you have identified. In this section of the white paper, your use of sources will be very important as well. You should integrate research to show that the problems you have identified will be solved by your new approach.

In the Conclusion section, you review what your research shows in light of the previous approaches used. You will not tell the audience what steps to take next. However, you will summarize what your findings articulate.

Your white paper should incorporate at least three graphics. Graphic can include tables, charts, or graphs showing some research findings. They can also be images that are relevant to the topic of the white paper. At least two of the graphics must be original. Original graphics can include photos taken by you; tables, charts, or graphs developed by you; or screen captures showing a function on your computer (not a screen capture of an image off of the web).

Comparison of State and National Data

Note: Before completing this Discussion, please familiarize yourself with the Week 5 Discussion Rubric located in the Course Information area of the course navigation menu.

Cassandra’s father has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Although she already knows that diabetes is a major health problem in the United States, she is surprised to discover that it is one of the leading causes of death. As she researches diabetes, she is even more surprised to learn that the prevalence of diabetes is significantly higher in the state of Tennessee, where she and her family live, than in most other states. Although the data she looks at sometimes vary depending on the source, comparing data from her state with national data gives her a better understanding of the impact of this disease. As Cassandra examines genetic, lifestyle, and environmental risk factors for the disease, she uncovers compelling distinctions between Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes that heighten her interest in addressing this health problem through her work as a health care administrator and as an advocate for improving health outcomes, not only for her father, but also for others who suffer from complications of Type 2 diabetes.

In this Discussion, you will research one of the leading causes of death in the United States, comparing data from your state with national data and examining risk factors associated with the health problem.

To prepare for this Discussion, examine the leading causes of death in the United States using the following websites from this week’s Learning Resources:

·         CDC: Leading Causes of Death

·         Medical News Today: What Are the Top 10 Leading Causes of Death in the US?

Select one leading cause of death on which to focus for this Discussion.

Using credible websites, research how your state’s data compare to national data related to this health condition. For example, you may search for information on the following websites, found in this week’s Learning Resources:

·         Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

·         United Health Foundation: America’s Health Rankings

·         Trust for America’s Health

·         Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Ensure that you examine comparable data from reliable sources. For instance, look at state and national prevalence rates from the same year and, ideally, from the same source.

Review the information on determinants of health (also referred to as risk factors) presented in Chapter 2 of the Shi and Singh (2015) textbook. In addition, conduct research using the Walden library and credible websites to identify and analyze the causes of your selected health problem and associated lifestyle, genetic, and environmental risk factors.

If you are an international student, you may research a leading cause of death in your country and compare data from your local community with national data.

Post by Day 3 a substantive and cohesive response to the following:

·         Describe one of the leading causes of death.

·         Compare your state’s (Georgia) data with national data related to this health problem. Identify your sources of data.

·         Describe the causes of this health problem and associated lifestyle, genetic, and environmental risk factors/determinants.

General Guidance on Discussion Posts: Your original post, due by Day 3, will typically be 3–4 paragraphs in length (not including references) as a general expectation/estimate. Refer to the Week 5 Discussion Rubric for grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use the rubric to assess your work.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings, evaluating how the analysis informs your understanding of death and disease and its impact on health care delivery in various locations.

General Guidance on Discussion Responses: Your Discussion responses, due by Day 5, will each typically be 1–2 paragraphs in length as a general expectation/estimate. Refer to the Week 5 Discussion Rubric for grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use the rubric to assess your work.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of reading the comments your colleagues made.
